Meet The Team

Owner
Dan Yates
With over a decade of CrossFit coaching experience, Dan brings a wealth of knowledge shaped by both military service and years of hands-on athlete development. He founded CSV in 2015 after a 15-year career in the Armed Forces, driven by a desire to give back to the community and share the passion for CrossFit that first took hold while training alongside the American military in Afghanistan. Those early experiences continue to influence his coaching style today — disciplined, supportive, and focused on helping people unlock their potential.
Gymnastics is Dan’s favourite coaching domain; he loves guiding athletes to build strength, control, and confidence on the rig. Personally, he gravitates toward rig-based movements and a heavy clean, always enjoying the blend of precision and power.
Favourite WOD: Hammer
Most embarrassing moment: Dan once demonstrated a snatch to a packed class, clipped himself on the head, and tried to style it out — right up until the blood made its appearance.
Above all else, Dan is passionate about creating an environment where everyone feels challenged, encouraged, and part of the CSV family.

Owner
Adam Cox
As one of Shadow Valley’s original members and now co-owner, Adam has helped shape the gym’s culture from day one. His background in team sport and high-performance environments influences everything he brings to the community — from the standards he sets to the support he gives its members.
Honour and Loyalty are at the heart of his philosophy. Shadow Valley has taken people through tough times and big wins alike, and Adam believes in staying the course, trusting the process, and always pushing forward.
A strong advocate of General Physical Preparedness, Adam focuses on building real, usable fitness through smart coaching, consistency, and an inclusive environment. He’s the first to admit he’s not the strongest or most skilled in the room, but his strength lies in surrounding himself with talented, dedicated professionals.
Expertise: GPP, HYROX/CrossFit engine development, and helping members realise their potential.
Favourite movement/WOD: Any big-engine grinder — grit over glory.
Unpopular opinion: Most people need better pacing and basics, not more flashy skills.
Most embarrassing moment: His gym attire… ask the long-time members.

Coach
David James
David discovered CrossFit in 2013 after watching the CrossFit Games — and after getting lapped by a friend during his first workout, Barbara, he was instantly hooked. With a background in rugby, football and boxing, fitness has always been a constant, but CrossFit quickly became the passion that stuck.
He earned his Level 1 in early 2015 and began coaching full-time at CSV in 2019, progressing to his Level 2 shortly after in 2020. Rather than specialising in one area, David prides himself on being a well-rounded coach, but if he had to choose a favourite domain, it would be powerlifting — deadlifts, squats, pressing, and squat cleans are firmly in his wheelhouse.
His favourite movement is anything involving a barbell, while burpees sit firmly at the bottom of his list.
Most embarrassing moments? Falling off the rig learning toes-to-bar, and the time he got his belly stuck attempting a pullover.
David brings experience and a genuine passion for helping members improve across all areas of their training.

Coach
Maria Bridgman
With over a decade of CrossFit experience, Maria brings knowledge, competitiveness, and a true passion for helping others progress. Having competed in numerous CrossFit events and previously represented her country as an international touch rugby player, she understands both performance and longevity in sport.
Her coaching style is shaped by years of learning from a wide variety of top-level coaches, giving her a versatile and athlete-focused approach.
Her favourite movement is the clean — technical, powerful, and endlessly satisfying to refine.
Fun fact: Maria once fell off a pull-up bar and landed on a stack of plates, creating a permanent dent in her glute… a story to remind you to wrap those thumbs.
